LIPTROT
The English family name Liptrot appears in the classification of “personal name origin”, ie:- may be derived from a parental first name or from the font name of the grandfather or indeed a more remote ancestor of the original bearer of the surname.
In this instance, the family name Liptrot indicates “son of Liptrot”, an ancient first name of apparently unknown origin believed to be derived from the Old English words “lieb” meaning “dear” and “trut” meaning “beloved” (dearest beloved ?).
Known variants of the name include Liptrott and Liptrat.
The earliest reference that I can find to the name, or variant, is a marriage record at Kirkham (Lancashire) of Robert Liptrot (from Standish in Wigan, Lancashire) to a Jona Wall on the 9th of June 1554.
Parish and Probate records between the mid 1550’s to the early Nineteenth century are shown here.
